I recently had the pleasure of conducting a communication and presentation skills workshop for the team at Biochromatographix, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience.
From the very beginning, the team was engaged, open-minded, and eager to learn. We focused on reducing filler words, improving voice techniques and enunciation, and building confidence when speaking and presenting. What stood out to me most was the participants’ willingness to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the learning process.
One of the highlights of the session was the presentation practice component. Each participant delivered a short presentation, which we recorded and reviewed together afterwards. This proved to be one of the most valuable parts of the workshop. Often, we are unaware of our own speaking habits until we see ourselves from the audience’s perspective. The recordings gave everyone the opportunity to identify areas for improvement, whether it was reducing filler words, speaking with greater clarity, improving vocal variety, or projecting more confidence.
There were moments of surprise, laughter, and valuable self-discovery as they recognised both their strengths and areas they could work on. The discussions that followed were constructive and encouraging, allowing everyone to reflect on their progress and gain practical insights they could immediately apply.
Here are two tips that I shared with the team:
1. Replace filler words with purposeful pauses.
Many speakers use words such as “um,” “uh,” or “like” when gathering their thoughts. We practised replacing these fillers with short pauses instead. A pause not only sounds more professional and confident but also gives the audience time to absorb key points.
2. Slow down and focus on clear enunciation.
When we are nervous, we often speak too quickly. By consciously slowing down and articulating each word clearly, speakers can improve their credibility and ensure their message is understood. A measured pace also helps presenters appear more composed and confident.
As a trainer, it was especially gratifying to watch the participants grow more confident throughout the workshop. By the end of the session, there was a noticeable difference in how they approached their presentations. They spoke with greater awareness, clearer articulation, and a stronger presence, demonstrating the impact that focused practice and feedback can have in a relatively short period of time.
Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such an engaged group. It was wonderful to see each participant gain valuable insights into their own communication style and leave with practical tools to communicate their ideas with greater clarity, confidence, and impact. I look forward to seeing how they continue to apply these skills in their future presentations and professional interactions.
