FACT OR MYTH?
“Dressing extravagantly can enhance my presentations.”
Answer: That’s a MYTH.
Though appearance certainly holds its importance, dressing over-the-top can take away from your presentation. Imagine if we were to bejewel our entire outfit in sequins, transforming ourselves into a shimmering mega diamond. People would definitely be paying attention to YOU, but not for what you would have to say or present. In essence, you’d inadvertently outshine your presentation. That is, of course, unless your presentation is centered around the attire itself…
We’re not saying to dress in drabs, but to ATTRACT NOT DISTRACT!
When it comes to presentations, we want others to engage with our content, not be fixated on our attire. The goal is to leave a lasting impact for the message we’re trying to get across.
If the goal is to draw attention to our presentation, we should strive to captivate the audience through the mastery of our skills. Expert presenters can keep the audience engaged and interested for extended periods of time without needing to capture their attention through any other means – such as distracting clothing. In short, the clothes don’t make the man (or a great presentation in this case), the skills do!
