FACT OR MYTH?
“We need to feel confident in order to give a great presentation.”
Answer: That’s a MYTH.
Feeling confident does not equate to a great presentation. To a certain extent, we all experience some kind or form of performance anxiety as we deliver a speech or presentation on the big stage. As a result, we are left to think that confidence is the solution to a better presentation as we FEEL inadequate. Sorry to burst your bubble my friends, but our audience does not actually care for how we feel inside. What they really care about is how we make them feel!
In these situations, what matters the most is how we can appear confident to our audience – and we can do so through the voice. Volume projection, inflections, and speaking in a low and deep voice, are just a few examples of voice techniques we can adopt to project confidence through the voice. As we progress and learn to speak with great confidence, our audience immediately becomes more willing to listen to us as we seem sure of what we’re saying and sound credible too. That’s what makes a great presentation!
As many have said, you’ve got to “Fake it till you make it”! As we learn how to better use our voices, we may even end up feeling confident in our presentations over time. Projecting confidence and feeling confident doing so too? Now, that’s a plus!
