FACT OR MYTH?
“We should speak fast to convey the importance of an urgent message”
Answer: That’s a MYTH.
Communication is a dynamic exchange involving both a sender and a receiver. Often, when urgency is at play, we tend to accelerate our words, believing that speaking faster conveys the importance of our message. However, we’re here to clarify that speaking fast does not equate to a successful message delivery.
As Coach Brian has theorised, humans possess a limited capacity to absorb information. Speaking too quickly can inadvertently cause us to gloss over vital points in our message. Picture our minds as storage units with fixed capacities. Continuously bombarding them with information can lead to overcrowding, causing us to potentially miss out on crucial details. Think about it – Can you catch 100% of what famous rapper, Eminem, raps about in his songs without having to look up the lyrics? I’m sure that most of us might only catch a few words here and there and not fully understand the depth of his song because he raps at the speed of light!
Okay… So, how can you effectively convey urgency without all the disadvantages of speaking too fast for the human brain? The secret actually lies in slowing down – and no, I don’t mean moving your mouths in slow motion, but slowing down through pausing. These pauses give our audience the necessary time to digest information before moving on to new concepts. Most importantly, they break down the information into smaller, manageable chunks, making it easier for our listeners to absorb and engage with our message, rather than feeling like they’re being rapped at.
But, when exactly are you supposed to pause and for how long? We will teach you all about the foundations of pausing in our Voice and Public Speaking programmes. Learn the technique of proper pausing with us!
