FACT OR MYTH?
“You can convey excitement in your speech with a high-pitched voice”
Answer: …
That’s a FACT.
A high-pitched voice can definitely communicate feelings of excitement in your speech, but at the same time, it can be very annoying to listen to. People tend to tune out to high-pitch voices because it can cause them anxiety and discomfort. Brian recalls a time when he overheard a mother screaming at a child in high-pitched voice to “CLEAN UP HIS ROOM!”. Obviously, he wasn’t a big fan.
In public speaking, you want your audience to listen and pay attention to you, and not the opposite. As such, we should aim to speak in a more calm and subdued tone, but also use word stresses and emphasis to sound dynamic. This is how you can sound both soothing and exciting to your audience!
