Welcome back to “How To Make Your Singlish Sound Better”. For today, we delve into the magnificence that is Pausing. Join us as we teach you how to pause and how long to pause for for effective communication.
Why is pausing all that important anyway? Well, pausing gives us the illusion that you are slowing down, which helps others catch what you’re saying. Pausing also helps to break up our sentences into smaller chunks of information so that we can get our message across with ease.
Take for instance, this sentence “We need to restock the milk in the pantry as soon as possible because we are running low. Otherwise, we won’t be able to complete the 200-cake order by tomorrow morning.”
Wasn’t that a handful? All those words only carry 2 important messages – To restock the milk in order to complete the pending cake order, and the urgency of it.
Is there a way to communicate urgency while getting your message across coherently? Yes, the answer is pausing.
Let’s try to better break up the information. Try saying this instead and pause for 1 second whenever you see a “/”.
“We need to restock the milk in the pantry / as soon as possible / as we are running low. Otherwise, / we won’t be able to complete the 200-cake order / by tomorrow morning.”
In conclusion:
More pauses = Better absorption of information for your listener
