There is a big difference between words and messages.
Sometimes, we say things, but we send out a completely different message. We think that the words we speak are good enough to send out the message that we intended, but many a time, the message is lost. If you have found yourself in this situation before, here are three points to help you along:
1. Pay Attention to Word Stresses
It is said that many people mispronounce words like strawberry, sword, film and so on. Often, in doing so, people tend to misunderstand what we say. We should pay some attention on at least how some words are pronounced or stressed.
2. Portray your Emotions
Most of the time, it’s not what we say; it’s how we say it. If you’re happy, portray happy emotions. If you’re upset about something and feel the need to get the message across, it is absolutely alright to portray those emotions in your speech to some extent, as long as you don’t let your emotions get the better of you.
3. Listen to Yourself and Practice
Remember, like all speaking skills, this will take time to get used to. Be patient with yourself, take the time to record yourself when you practice. By recording yourself, you’ll hear what you actually sound like, and this will give you a good idea on what areas you need to work on. Also, make the time to practice. As much as there may be many other things to do or worry about, speaking well is an art that will set you apart from many others. Do invest the time in this.
