Speaking well should NOT be difficult! It should be as easy as 1,2,3!
You may think that the change in order to attain a better-sounding voice and better articulation involves loads of hard work and vocal strain (which may scare away most). However, we’re here to tell you that improvements can be made through small changes. There’s no need for a 180 degree change in the way we speak – We can start by working on simple modifications to our speech pattern as native Singlish speakers. Of course, change doesn’t happen instantaneously. Through this new series “How to Make Your Singlish Sound Better”, we aim to provide little tips that can be adopted into our everyday speech.
Today, we focus on the sound of the letter ‘T’, which is one of the sharpest sounds in the alphabet, and therefore, extremely critical to sounding crisp and clear when speaking. Focusing especially on the T sound at the back of words helps to bring out the clarity in our voices. For example, we have the word ‘Conflict’. Most of us pronounce it as ‘Conflic’, ending at the sound of the letter ‘C’ and not sounding out the ‘T’. If we do not make the ‘T’ sound, our peers may mistake what we are saying as ‘Cornflake’ instead of ‘Cornflict’. Do you hear that? Well, I do.
We can even take it up a level by splitting up the word from the ‘T’ – saying “con-flic-T” instead of “con-flict”. This truly emphasizes the ‘T’ at the back of words and makes us sound clear and intelligible.
Let’s continue to make the sound of the letter ‘T’ and get that down to a T (tee)!…pun intended…Haha!
