When I think about why I do what I do, it always comes back to moments like this.
One of my students, a bright and curious 11-year-old, came into my class with his own set of challenges. Particularly in articulation and reading confidently for oral examinations.
From the start, I made it a point to connect with him beyond just the lesson material. I brought in his personal interests, added humor into our sessions, and created an environment where learning didn’t feel like a chore, but something he could actually look forward to.
Over time, I began to see a shift. He grew more confident in the way he expressed himself. His reading became clearer and more deliberate. The same student who was once hesitant started to engage more, laugh more, and take ownership of his progress.
One of the key things I always emphasise to students is that a strong voice isn’t about being loud. It’s about being clear and intentional. Here are two simple tips I often share:
- Slow down your speech. When you rush, your words tend to blur together. By pacing yourself, you give each word space to be heard and understood.
- Open your mouth when you speak. It sounds simple, but proper mouth movement improves articulation significantly and makes your speech much clearer, especially during oral exams.
Hearing that he found my lessons “fun and interesting,” and that he would recommend my classes to others, means a lot to me.
That’s always been my goal. Not just to teach, but to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. Knowing that he feels more prepared for his oral examinations is incredibly rewarding.
Moments like these remind me that teaching isn’t just about delivering content. It’s about building trust, understanding each student as an individual, and helping them find confidence in their own voice.
